Orthodox Baptism Books for Kids

January 11, 2024 by Destinie Winn

This last weekend we celebrated the feast of Theophany! This of course is the day we commemorate Christ’s baptism in the Jordan at the hands of St John the Baptist. In our parish, we had the joy of welcoming 18 newly illumined Christians! It was a joyful occasion indeed.

One of my favorite gifts to give for baptisms, specifically for children, is an Orthodox book about baptism! For many young children, they may not remember the details of their baptism, so showing them photos of that day and reading a book about it (especially for older siblings) can be a wonderful way to talk about the day they became a Christian!

About Potamitis Publishing:

It’s no secret, we love all things Potamitis Publishing! If you don’t know about them yet, they are the first-ever Orthodox Christian publishing ministry that publishes books exclusively for Orthodox Christian children. Since December 17, 2007, their family has published dogmatically correct, stunningly beautiful, intriguing books, posters, stickers, and CDs for Orthodox Children around this blessed Globe! As of January 2024, Potamitis Publishing – Orthodox Children's Books has published two hundred fourteen new English books; two hundred five are available today; two hundred fifteen of them have also been translated and published in Greek. More than seventy have been translated and published in Romanian, dozens more in Russian, and fourteen other languages!

All of their books have been printed in Saint Demetrios's city – Thessaloniki, Greece; Lincoln, Nebraska, USA; and at the oldest settlement in Europe, Sesklo, Greece.

For Older Kids:

Need to prepare your child for Orthodox Baptism? One on the most comprehensive books on baptism that I have found is Vested in Christ by Newrome Press. This would be ideal for children 6+ all the way through high school years. If you are looking to help prepare your child for baptism, this would be my recommendation!

In this book you will learn the answers to some of these questions:

• Why was Christ Baptized?
• Why does the Church read prayers on the first and eighth day after the birth of a child?
• What is the role of the Godparent?
• What are the essential elements for the celebration of the Mystery of Holy Baptism?
• What are the prayers of exorcism and what is the renunciation of Satan?
• What is the significance of the triple immersion for the person being baptized?
• What are washing and tonsure?
• Why are infants baptized?
• Why are baptismal clothes white?
• What was the baptism of St. John the Forerunner?
• Why does the Priest seal the newly baptized person with Holy Myrrh?
