My hope is that these will aid you in sharing more about our faith with your children in a way that is developmentally appropriate, allows for their exploration and participation in the feast, and hopefully cultivate a rich soil in their hearts that allows the seed of Truth that stays with them all the days of their life. A Simple Way to Live the Orthodox Calendar at Home
One of the greatest treasures of the Orthodox Church is the Liturgical Calendar. Through feasts, fasts, saints, and hymns, the Church teaches us how to see time itself as holy. And yet—especially for families—it can also feel overwhelming. There is so much to remember, prepare for, and explain to our children. Over the years, I’ve learned that living the Orthodox faith at home doesn’t mean doing everything. It means doing a few things intentionally. That conviction is what led me to create my new Monthly Orthodox Family Calendar Printables for 2026.
For the feast of the Annunciation, which is celebrated on March 25th, we have the tradition in our family of sprucing up our garden and planting new flowers named after the other of God (Theotokos, the Virgin Mary). I love this feast day tradition because it helps us lean into the spiritual symbolism in tending to a garden, one that the Theotokos would have been very familiar with - the garden of our hearts - in order to prepare to receive Christ. After all, she is the one who Jesus reminds us in the Gospel who “heard the word of God and kept it” (Luke 11:28). So as we prepare for this feast, let's prepare a place in our homes for our very own Mary Garden, with flowers dedicated to her. Great Lent is a special gift that the Church gives us in order to help us re-focus our lives on Christ. The Orthodox Church has set aside 40 days (plus Holy Week) as a special time of repentance and calls us to a long and sustained spiritual effort. It’s a wonderful journey to the very source of the Orthodox faith; a rediscovery of the Christian way of life. A chance to renew or zeal, set aright our priorities, and live as true Christians. As we recognize this significant shift in our liturgical calendar, I wanted to provide resources and ideas to help you cultivate a lenten environment in your homes and with your families.

In Medieval Europe, pious Christians loved to find reminders of their faith in nature, and named many plants after Jesus and the Theotokos. It became popular to take these plants and create “Mary Gardens”, gardens full of flowers and herbs that were named after the Mother of God, often with a statue of her at its center. Today, for the feast of the Annunciation, in honor of the day that Mary said yes to God, we planted the start of our own Mary Garden, using seeds of flowers that are named for her.

This month is jam-packed on the Orthodox Christian Liturgical Calendar. But before you have a min-panic attack… let me break it down for you. Triodion is in full force (the 3 weeks leading up to Lent), we are trekking through towards Lent (starts March 18th), so much of what I’ve listed here is automated. If you are attending services each Sunday and commit to embracing Lent as much as you’re capable of, you’ll be just fine. I’ve added in some fun feast day traditions here if you’re feeling extra capacity but don’t over stress about it. So here are some ways to embrace the liturgical season this month (IN SLIDES):

One of my favorite things about the Orthodox Church is the Liturgical calendar. I love the rich traditions that help us engage in the Liturgical year as well. It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the amount of feast days, saint days, fasting periods, etc. So my hope with these monthly printables is to pair it down for you. Let’s make a goal to learn about ONE saint this month, and do ONE activity this month related to a featured saint. Throughout the month, learn ONE hymn by singing it together every day, or as often as you can. And lastly, intentionally carve out time to create a strong family culture in your home (in the Family Corner section).
