Creation : Bible Lesson for Kids

My daughter is in Kindergarten this year, and we are beginning our first official year of homeschooling! One of my goals for this year is to really lean into our Christian Education - Bible lessons, daily prayers, Liturgical living. We had a soft start to our homeschool school year this past week. I am hoping to spend time each week really diving into one story of the Bible so that it is implanted into their hearts and minds. This week we were learning all about the story of Creation in Genesis 🌎

We found a free printable called “My Creation Book” by Happy Home Fairy. We printed out the pages and the girls worked on their Creation books all week. We found this printable project through Pinterest and it was super great! It even has a little song for each day of creation that we sang along with, set to the nursery rhyme tune “Frere Jacques.” or “Are you sleeping, brother John?”.

It’s all very easy to put together. We kept ours very simple, using only what we had, and drew the designs with markers. We also re-purposed a cloud project we worked on the week before and made it our earth for the second day of creation.

Before you begin, here are the supplies you can use:

  • FREE Printables (below)

  • Yellow and black construction paper, glue (page 1)

  • Cotton balls, blue tissue paper squares, glue (page 2)

  • We collected real leaves/dirt but you can use construction paper (page 3)

  • Yellow crayons, stickers (page 4)

  • Blue dot marker, bird and fish creation printable from HERE, glue (page 5)

  • Person cut-out, animal stickers, glue (page 6)

  • Blue paper circle, green tissue paper squares, red heart, glue (page 7)

As we worked on the different days of creation, I taught the girls the little song that is featured on each page.  It is sung to the tune of, “Frere Jacques.”

We also checked out a few books from the Library (below) and read the story of Creation from each of these books. Definitely recommend them!

How I structured the lesson:

First, we began by reading the story of creation. We read it from the two books above, and I explained in more detail how God created Adam and Eve (since that was rather vague in both stories). We then sang the song about the 7 days of creation (provided in the printable “My Creation Book”. We then worked on one page a day, and each day, and during Bible time in the morning, we reviewed what God created on the previous days. By the end of the week, the girls were sooo excited to show off their book (which we stapled together as the binding).

We spent no more than 15 minutes a day reading/crafting. It was very low pressure and by the end we had a book filled with the days of creation. On the last day, we looked at the Icon of Adam naming the animals by Uncut Mountain Supply (which was gifted to us by a sweet parishioner). It was the perfect introduction to our weekly Bible lessons!

As we lean into homeschooling, I’m considering starting a series on my blog to document our Bible lessons/resources as well. I’m figuring this out as I go, not using specific curriculum for our Bible lessons, so I’m happy to share what we find along the way. Stay tuned!
